What is Motivational Interviewing (MI) Therapy?

Motivational Interviewing (MI) Therapy is a collaborative, goal-oriented approach that helps individuals explore and resolve ambivalence about change. In MI therapy, the therapist provides empathetic support and guidance as clients explore their motivations, values, and goals. Through reflective listening and open-ended questions, clients are encouraged to articulate their reasons for change and identify steps towards their goals. MI therapy recognizes that change is a process, and aims to enhance intrinsic motivation by highlighting the discrepancy between current behaviors and desired outcomes. By empowering clients to explore their own reasons for change and build confidence in their ability to make positive changes, MI therapy helps foster lasting behavior change and personal growth. MI supports clients to progress through the stages of change - precontemplation, contemplation, planning, action, etc.
