What is marriage or couple counselling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy, works by providing a safe and structured space for couples to address and explore their relationship dynamics, challenges, and goals with the guidance of a trained therapist (clinical psychololgist or counsellor). During sessions, couples have the opportunity to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns openly and honestly, while the therapist facilitates communication, promotes understanding, and helps identify underlying issues. Therapists may utilize various techniques and interventions to improve communication, enhance emotional intimacy, and develop effective conflict resolution skills. Through collaborative efforts and commitment to the therapeutic process, couples can gain insight, strengthen their connection, and work towards building a healthier and more fulfilling relationship. The therapist does not take sides and maintains neutrality and impartiality. Couple counselling is a great way to explore topics that might be taboos or too conflictual or triggering to talk about in your typical day to day conversations. Couple counselling explores blind spots, alternative perspectives, and assists a couple to move forward from getting stuck in their current cycles and patterns.
